New Cumana NC?

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 09:01, 25/5/2001 | , , ,

SLYMThe Cumana Web site has details about a new NC called SLYM.

Although the current photo looks very much like an LCD monitor, a keyboard and a mouse connected to a desktop machine hidden behind a curtain (running only the demo version of Oregano too), the specs for the thin client look quite reasonable:

  • ARM 7500FE (56MHz)
  • 32Mb EDO
  • 8Mb Flash
  • 10/100 Network card with Activity light
  • 2x PS2 ports
  • Serial port
  • Headphone out
  • Audio In
  • Parallel Port
  • SVGA Port
  • (Power on/off switch)
  • (reset Switch)
  • USB (not connected at present)
  • RISC OS 4.03
  • Oregano Web Browser (Internet Ready)
  • Optional Cordless Keyboard and Mouse
Price to be confirmed in July 2001

Thanks to Andrew Harmsworth for the heads-up.

Unregistered user I'm quite forgiving about such things - I can remember (vaguely) an advert for the Acorn Electron running BBC Elite, without even being plugged in! :)

Unregistered user I suspect you will find that the reason the LCD base is so chunky is that it houses the computer. This looks like a standard part the likes of which where recently seen in Computer Shopper when the reviewed "sexy" PC's.

Unregistered user That might be so, but probably not in the one pictured. Of course the cables going under the curtain (click on the picture for a larger version) could be a clumsy attempt to hide the monitor cable - although if everything's built in, you wouldn't need an external cable at all - but I think it's an obvious fake so that it doesn't look like they're trying to hide anything. After all, sharp-eyed RISC OS fans have seen through better fakes, so don't even try?

Unregistered user The only thing schools will want to know is the price, however! Methinks it might be possible to keep it sub-500ukp, in which case they will sell in droves.

The wonderful thing about it, compared to a 500ukp PC say, is that its power consumption is very low. Since schools don't have computer rooms equipped with Air Conditioning, this makes summers much more enjoyable.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one, and perhaps several dozen more...

Bravo Cumana/Castle!

Unregistered user A quick note for those who are doubting or just confused about this new concept machine. We can confirm that the machine pictured is a fully functional, self-contained prototype. This was shown working on the Cannon/Cumana stand at the recent Wakefield show. The two cables that are visible are the power and networking cables. Apart from those the whole machine is enclosed within the screen housing including the reciever for the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Unregistered user Good looking computer but unfortunately a little underpowered (ARM7500FE yet again!) When are we going to get a non-VIDC, non-IOMD version of RISC OS?

ROL - please if not 32bit then at least VIDC/IOMD independance!

Unregistered user I was impressed. I understand that the cost of flat screens are due to reduce significantly. I did like the all in one design with the NC incorporated behind the screen.
I would really like to replace the portable PC on my desk with one of these connected to our school network.

Unregistered user There's no mention of a Hard Disk in the above spec (this is not unusual for an NC). Bear in mind much of the cost of a lap top is the small footprint hard drive and the specialised cases, keyboards and touchpad devices they use. Chances are a laptop will be at least £300-400 up on those sort of prices, still if one could be assembled for less than £1000 even a ARM7500 with 32Mb (EDO) might be a winner.
