Acorn FTP resources available again

Posted by Richard Goodwin on 13:03, 1/5/2001 | , ,

RISCOS Ltd. have resurrected the Acorn FTP site, that essential resource for programming documentation and upgrade files.

Available via Web browser only, the address is http://acorn.riscos.com/

Unregistered user It clearly isn't true that it is only available via web browsers.

Unregistered user Accessing the site anonymously doesn't list acorn.riscos.com...?

Unregistered user No, it doesn't list acorn.riscos.com. The riscos.com domain isn't maintained by automated means, so if a new subdomain is added, it isn't listed.

Unregistered user So Jase, is the site available by any means other than a web browser?

Unregistered user Yes - I'm using wget to mirror it to my mirrors server this very moment. wget isn't a web browser.

I'd suggest everybody who's got the space free mirrors it anyway, it's not /that/ large, esp. after you've tarred and bzip2ed it.

Unregistered user Rob, stop being so damned pedantic. The point is that the old "FTP site" is not available by using an FTP client as before, only via the Web. Everyone - except you obviously - visits Web sites using a Web browser; I don't see how the word "clearly" comes into the situation you've advocated.

If anyone else has any news on the site actually becoming available via FTP (not via mirrors on other sites, the actual RISCOS Ltd version), please let us know.

Unregistered user I wouldn't need to be pedantic if you got things right in the first place :)

Saying 'Only available via the web' would have been pefectly correct. Why you then said 'browser' is anybody's guess.

I've now got a full mirror. If anybody wants FTP access, I'll see what I can do.

Unregistered user While it is a Good Thing that the New ... sorry ... Universal Boot is up on the site, I'd have thought they could have put the latest toolbox modules (and internet modules) in it. Particularly given the TextGadgets business if doing the two updates, which is OK for seasoned delvers into !Boot, but must be confusing for the completely non-techie types.
